Getting real about the psychological and emotional challenges of giving and inheriting wealth

Myth #1

Inheriting Wealth Makes Life Easy

We wish inheriting wealth made life easy, but in reality the research suggests exactly the opposite. Children from affluent families are actually much more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and substance use than even inner city children.* Being raised in affluence may appear ideal but it actually comes with its unique and very real challenges.

Myth #2

Raising children when your wealthy is easy

Raising children in wealth is far harder than it appears. Wealth ironically complicates family relationships. Affluent parents face unique pressures and often misunderstood challenges to ensure their children grow up grounded and motivated. This is no easy task.

Myth #3

Wealthy people have a lot of support when it comes to these issues

The reality is exactly the opposite. Discussing wealth is challenging because it often leads to judgment, envy, and strained relationships. There are also significant stigmas around unearned income, which often leads those inheriting wealth to be completely silent about the challenges this comes with. This topic is so tabboo we hear from our clients that sometimes they keep their inherited wealth even from their therapists! There are few safe spaces to openly address these challenges.

A definition:

Trust Fund Syndrome

"Trust fund syndrome" refers to the psychological and behavioral issues that can arise in individuals who have access to unearned wealth, often from a family bank account or a trust fund set up by family members. These issues can stem from the sense of entitlement, lack of motivation, and identity struggles that may accompany such financial security.
